“ 非常に面白かったのはその中で、日本人ほど哲学とか倫理観とか教育レベルとかそういったことの個人の力が高い国というのは、僕は今まで経験したことがなかったのです。ところが、そういう人たちを5人以上集めると、幼稚園みたいなもんでまるでまとまらない。イタリアの方がよっぽどまとまる、アメリカの方がよっぽどまとまるという現実に気がつきまして、ひょっとして日本って団体力ないんじゃないの？っていうことになり、僕の今までの仮説が逆転しました。皆さん何となく思い当たる節があるんじゃないかと。飲み屋に行くとすごいこと言うんです。仕事終わるとすごいこと言うんです。仕事の最中は黙って何も言わないですね。黙って何も言わないくせに何も考えてないかっていうと、当てると皆さんすばらしいこと言うんです。僕はそれは卑怯だと思いまして、自分が考えていることを、その場で決められた時間の中で他の人とシェアしないのはプロとして犯罪に近いと考えています。イタリアでそれをやると二度と会議に呼ばれません。ところが日本はそれをやって、黙っている方が会議に呼ばれるという、これは悪しき慣習だと思います。
